What Do You Need To Start Selling On eBay?

By Terry Gibbs
Net Biz Radio's eBay Expert

A lot of the Net Biz Radio listeners have questions about eBay. In fact, one of the most frequent questions is, "How do I start selling on eBay?"

You might be surprised, but you probably already have most of the things you'll need to start selling on eBay. Here's a list. . .

  1. A Computer With Internet Access and Email
  2. A Digital Camera
  3. A Photo Editing Program
  4. A Scale and Some Packing Materials
  5. An eBay Account

Let's look at each of these things one at a time.

1 - A Computer With Internet Access and Email: I know you have a computer and internet access because you are reading this webpage. Because you managed to find this webpage, you know enough about using your computer to get started on eBay. You'll also need to know how to email, but that's even easier than surfing the web so I am sure you already know how to send an email.

2 - A Digital Camera: You may already have a digital camera, but if you don't already have one almost any camera will work. If you are shopping for a camera, get one with at least 1.3 mega pixels, a macro setting for taking close-ups, and the ability to turn the flash off. In case you're curious, a pixel is a dot on the computer screen, but you don't need to know that to take good pictures.

3 - A Photo Editing Program: You'll also need a photo editing program. If you have a camera you have photo software because most cameras come with them. Unfortunately, the programs supplied by camera makers are much too complicated to learn quickly. The good news is there are easier to learn photo programs like XnView you can download for free online.

4 - A Scale And Some Packing Materials: Packing materials are easy. All you need are empty boxes, tape and padding material. You might have these things in your garage. If not, the post office will give you free boxes, or you can dig some out of a dumpster behind a store. You can also buy packing materials from a local packing supply house.

There is probably a scale on the floor in your bathroom. It won't be the easiest thing to use, but it will do an adequate job of weighing items. After you've sold a few items on eBay, you can use your profits to buy a postal scale at any office supply store. A good one will only cost you about fifty dollars.

5 - An eBay Account: You'll also need an eBay account. To register with eBay you only need an email account and a credit card or checking account. Then you fill in a form. It's not that hard.

That's all you need to get started selling on eBay. But, there is one thing I left off the list. . . Someone to take you by the hand, and show you the most effective way to sell on eBay.

Here at Net Biz Radio we get lots of questions about selling on eBay. In fact, beginning in August we will start spending a whole hour on every show answering questions about eBay.

But that's not enough.

You see, while listening on the radio to questions about eBay will help you improve your eBay selling skills, we just don't have the time on the show to take you step-by-step through selling on eBay. You need something more comprehensive. Like a manual.

Introducing Net Biz Radio's Fast Start Guide To Selling On eBay.

This fast start guide to eBay will take you step by step through everything involved in starting an eBay auction.

You will learn how to:

  • Create an eBay account.
  • Research to find out what your item is worth.
  • Find the best category to list your item.
  • Find the right keywords to get your item in front of as many bidders as possible.
  • Write a title to compel eBay surfers to look at your auction.
  • Take clear and detailed digital photos of your items.
  • Edit your photos so they load fast. (The manual explains step-by-step how to use free software to crop and edit your pictures.)
  • Include photos in your listings without paying expensive image hosting fees. (If you are currently paying to include images in your auctions, this information alone will save you more than the cost of this manual.)
  • Write auction listings that will get you higher bids.
  • Handle questions from bidders.
  • Select payment methods, and track payments from buyers.
  • Pack and ship your items safely and track packages through the mail.
  • Deal with unhappy buyers to lower complaints and returns.
  • Handle feedback and non paying bidders.
Now, you can surely learn all these things on your own by trial and error. That's how I learned about eBay. Over the past nine years, and 14,000 auctions, I have made almost every mistake possible. Well truthfully, I have never run an auction with a meaningless title, or without at least one picture, but I made a few mistakes when I was first starting out. Since then, I've tested every eBay option to learn exactly how to get the highest prices in my auctions.

With the Net Biz Radio's Fast Start Guide to Selling On eBay you can learn from my experience. This is a 135 page manual provided as a PDF download. You can read the book on your computer, or print it out and put it in a three-ring binder for quick access.

You need Adobe Acrobat reader to use the book. This is a free program you should already have. If you don't have Acrobat reader, there is a link on the download page to get a free copy.

PPS. Here's what one of my students said about this book:

"Whatever you are selling on eBay the most important aspect to your success is a thorough understanding of the process and reasons behind each action you take."

So many people just do what they see others do without thinking it through or testing the results. I appreciate throughout your book that you took the time to say WHY you chose to do things a certain way.

You have encouraged me and affirmed what I already knew. I love your description of why reserves and BIN's are counterproductive. I have observed that they were not wise for collectibles, but would not have been able to describe the reasons why as well as you did.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Elaine Smith
